SIT Study Abroad co-hosts conference

On 6-7 June, SIT Study Abroad co-sponsored, along with the Peace Institute of Slovenia, a conference titled, “Inclusion and Exclusion in and on the Borders of Europe,” held in Portoroz, Slovenia. The conference had 23 presentations by participants from across Europe, as well as North Africa, the Mideast and the US.

Presenters included Director of European and Mideast Studies, Jill Benderly, who was conference co-organizer, Academic Directors Orli Fridman (Balkans), Lahcen Haddad (Morocco), and Omar Nahas (Netherlands) as well as student alumna Emina Buzkinic and Kristen Johnson, and SIT Study Abroad affiliated faculty Marie Claude Lutrand (France), Sasa Bozic (Croatia), Nora Ahmetaj (Kosovo), Neza Kogovsek (Slovenia), and Michal Vasecka (Czech Republic/Slovakia).  SIT Study Abroad VP/Dean Maureen Powers and World Learning Trustee Allan Hodgson also attended the conference.

Themes included immigration policy, Islam and cultural diversity, nation states, minorities and border regimes. The conference was timely as Slovenia is currently presiding over the European Union, and members of the Slovene government were observers at the conference. Conference papers will soon be available on both the Peace Institute and World Learning websites.
